Kerala Appam | Vellayappam | Palappam.


Vellayappam is a common South Indian dish.It is a tasty and famous breakfast dish,It can be easy to prepare.It is one of the best kerala's traditional breakfast recipe.Mostly it is served with spicy curries like beef curry,Egg roast,Chick pea curry etc.
Appams are made from a batter using grinded rice and coconut.Today I am going to share the appam recipe which is fermenting by yeast.There are another form for fermentation of appam is used with toddy/kallu known as kallappam.The most easy and healthy way of fermentation is by using active dry yeast method.

Ingredients for making appam:

  1. White Raw rice- 2 cups.
  2. Steamed rice-1 cup.
  3. Coconut-Grated,1/2 coconut.
  4. Salt-As required.
  5. Active dry yeast-1 teaspoon.
  6. LukeWarm water-As needed for grinding.

Method of making vellayappam:

  1. Wash and soak rice in enough water for 8 hours .
  2. Grind all the ingredients with enough water to a smooth batter.
  3. Cover it and keep aside for the fermentation for 8 hours or over night.
  4. If the batter is too thick add some more water to it.Do not be too loose or too thick.
  5. Heat a non-stick appa chatti or normal cast iron appachatti.Pour one ladle full of batter lift up the appachatti and rotate the appachatti to spread the batter all over the pan.
  6. Cover it and cook in medium low flame until its side turns slightly brown colour.

Ready..Serve it.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve it with egg roast.
  • Serve it with mutton roast,mutton korma.

Pour this to appachatti and round it..
