Green gram stir fry Recipe | Cheru payar thoran



This is one of my favorite side dish with kanji(Rice porridge).Green gram stir fry is an excellent combination with kanji.It is very easy to make and it is highly nutritious.Taste of this stir fry is the combination of green gram and coconut.Initially we have to cook the green gram.For that soak green gram for at least 5 hours.
Then we can cook them quickly.You can also cook green gram in a pressure cooker.

Cheru payar thoran/Kerala special green gram stir fry

Ingredients for green gram stir fry:

  1. Green gram/cherupayar-1 cup.
  2. Grated coconut-1/2 cup.
  3. Shallots-5 to 6(I used chopped onion instead of that).
  4. Green chillies-3 numbers.
  5. Turmeric powder-1/4 teaspoon.
  6. Mustard seeds-1/4 teaspoon.
  7. Curry leaves-2 sprigs.
  8. Salt to taste.
  9. Cooking oil.

Method of preparation:

  1. Soak the green gram/cherupayar in water for at least 5 hours.
  2. Take a heavy bottomed pan ,add soaked green gram ,enough water and little salt .Cook until it is done.
  3. You can also cook this in a pressure cooker for 2,3 whistles.
  4. Take your blender and put coconut,shallots,green chillies,turmeric to it.Just pulse them 2,3 times.
  5. Heat oil in a pan .Add in mustard seeds to it.Allow them to splutter.
  6. Add curry leaves to it and the crushed mixture. Fry for 5 minutes.
  7. Add cooked green gram to it.Combine them well.Adjust the salt if needed.

Green gram stir fry is ready to serve.Serve hot with kanji/Rice porridge.Enjoy..
