Mutton Korma | Kerala Style Mutton Kurma

Mutton Korma or mutton kurma is a very popular side dish. Which can be served with rice or roti. The taste of mutton korma has come from the blend of some rich spices and mutton.Mutton korma is a rich and spicy food thus prepared on special occasions like festivals or weddings. Several cuisines have their own way of preparing mutton or non-veg recipes.

Today I am sharing a Kerala style mutton korma which can be prepared easily. 
Let us get started.

Ingredients required for this recipe:

  1. Mutton-1 Kilogram, cut and cleaned.
  2. Black Pepper-1 Teaspoon.
  3. Fennel seeds-1 Teaspoon.
  4. Star Anise-1 number.
  5. Cardamom- 5 small cardamom.
  6. Cinnamon stick-½" stick
  7. Cloves-3 Cloves.
  8. Bay leaf-1 Bay leaf.
  9. Ginger -1 Tablespoon, Crushed.
  10. Garlic-1 Tablespoon, Crushed.
  11. Onion-2 Large, Sliced.
  12. Green chillies-3 Split.
  13. Curry leaves- Few.
  14. Turmeric powder-1 Teaspoon.
  15. Coriander powder-2 Tablespoon.
  16. Garam masala powder-½ teaspoon.
  17. Tomato-1 Large, chopped.
  18. Lemon juice -1 Tablespoon.
  19. Coconut- ½ Cup grated.
  20. Cashew nuts-6 to 7 numbers.
  21. Oil-2 Tablespoons.
  22. Salt as required.
  23. Water as needed.

Method of preparation:


  1. Heat a pan with oil. Add black pepper, fennel seeds, star anise, cardamom, cloves and bay leaf.Saute for few seconds.
  2. Add in crushed ginger and garlic to this.Saute well.
  3. Add onion, green chillies, few curry leaves and salt.
  4. Saute until it becomes golden colour.
  5. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. Saute until the oil get separated on a low flame.
  6. Add chopped tomatoes and cook for few minutes.
  7. Now the masala is ready. Allow cooling for few minutes.
  8. Then transfer the masala to the blender jar. Add little water and blend to a smooth paste.
  9. In a pressure cooker add cleaned mutton pieces, lemon juice, salt and ground masala paste.
  10. Mix it well and pressure cook for at least 3 to 4 whistles.
  11. In a blender jar add coconut grated and few cashew nuts. you can soak the cashew nuts for few minutes in water.Grind them to a smooth paste.
  12. Add this to the cooked mutton gravy.
  13. Mix it well and cook until the gravy thickens.
  14. Mutton korma is now ready to serve. Add few curry leaves on top and serve...
