Kattikalan /Kurukku kalan recipe |Kerala Onam Sadya Special


Hello everyone,
Today I am sharing an easy and delicious part of Kerala sadya. Sadya is a traditional feast, where an array of vegetarian dishes, served on a banana leaf in a particular order. No Kerala feast /Sadya is complete without Kalan /Kurukku Kalan /Katti Kalan which is made of yogurt, coconut, and vegetables like raw plantain and elephant yam.
Kalan is prepared for pouring consistency whereas kurukku kalan is a thick curry where yogurt is concentrated. It is little time consuming to make, but its worth all the effort.


Ingredients for making Kurukku kalan/katti kalan are:

  1. Elephant yam- 1 Cup,diced.
  2. Raw Plantain- 1 large, peeled and diced.
  3. Turmeric powder- 1/2 Teaspoon.
  4. Black pepper powder-1/2 Teaspoon.
  5. Ghee-1 Teaspoon.
  6. Yoghurt-1 Cup, Beaten.
  7. Coconut grated-1 Cup.
  8. Green chillies-2 Numbers.
  9. Cumin seeds-1/2 Teaspoon.
  10. Fenugreek powder-1/2 Teaspoon.(Roasted)
  11. Water as needed.
  12. Salt to taste.

For seasoning:

  1. Coconut oil-1 Tablespoon.
  2. Mustard seeds-1/2 teaspoon.
  3. Dry red chilies- 2 to 3 numbers.
  4. Curry leaves -1 Sprig.
Method of preparation:


  1. Wash and peel the skin of plantain and cut the elephant yam into thick cube pieces and set it aside. 
  2. Beat the yogurt/curd well and set it aside. 
  3. Grind the grated coconut, cumin seeds, green chilies with little water to a thick paste and keep it aside.
  4. In a manchatti/earthen pot add diced yam and plantain. Add turmeric powder & pepper powder.
  5. Cook them along with enough water. Once the veggies are cooked, allow evaporating all the water from the pot.
  6. Add a teaspoon of ghee to this and mix really well.
  7. Now add the beaten curd to this. Add salt to taste. Stir continuously until the gravy is thickened.
  8. Add the ground paste to this and cook for few minutes on a low flame.
  9. Finally, add roasted fenugreek powder and mix it well. Turn off the flame and set aside.
  10. Heat a small pan with coconut oil. Crack the mustard seeds and add dry red chilies and curry leaves.
  11. Pour this over the prepared kurukku kalan.

Enjoy this yummy side dish with rice..
