Wheat flour Banana/Plantain Fritters | Ethakkappam | Kerala Style Pazhampori Recipe

Hey, today I am going to share a healthy and tasty tea time snack called Pazhampori aka Ethakka Appam.
In the Malayalam language, we popularly call this tea time snack recipe as pazham pori recipe where pazham means fruit (and we use this word to refer to bananas as well) and pori means fritters.
The other popular Malayalam words for this popular Kerala style snack recipe is vazhakka appam recipe or vazhakkappam recipe or ethakka appam recipe or ethakkappam recipe all means fritters made of bananas.
If the plantains you buy are green plantains you need to wait until they are ripe and have yellow skin (can turn black or brown which is fine).
Usually, green plantains ripe in 2 to 3 days time if you keep them in the kitchen counter where they receive light.
However, it is best to buy ripe plantains itself as sometimes the green ones do not ripe perfectly to make the fritters.
Ingredients required in this recipe are:
  1. Ripe Plantains / Large Banana - 4 numbers, small ripe plantains.

  3. Rice flour-2 Tablespoons.
  4. Sugar- 2 -3 Tablespoons.
  5. Cardamom- 2 numbers, crushed.
  6. Turmeric powder- a pinch (For yellow color)
  7. Egg- 1 medium-sized.
  8. Baking soda- a pinch.
  9. Salt to taste.
Method of preparation:
  1. Slice the bananas into 3 or 4 lengthwise pieces. Keep the slices aside.

  3. To make the pazham pori, heat oil in a frying pan.
  4. When the oil is hot, dip each slice of the banana in the batter.
  5. Very carefully put the banana slice(which is dipped in batter) into the hot oil for frying.
  6. Depending upon the size of the frying pan, you may add more banana slices at a time. Just make sure to not overcrowd the pan since we have to flip them and fry the other side too.
  7. Fry till they are fried until the batter is all cooked and crispy and the fritters are golden yellow in color.
  8. Remove from oil to a paper towel to remove the excess oil.
Enjoy the delicious banana fritters hot with tea!
